Stop Global Warming in Balinese Style

Global warming has been the most popular and the most global problem recently and various ways have been thought, planed and implemented to fight the global warming and in the United Nation Conference For Climate Change in Nusa Dua last week came up with a proposal to adopt Balinese Nyepi (silent day) in which no activity is allowed for 24 hours, no working, no travelling, absence from using electricity, engine and other pollution-generate devices. This proposal seems quite tough to be adopted by the fast-paced developed nation but Nyepi is not the only kind of effort to fight global warming has to offer there are several simpler efforts to preserve the environment and reducing glass-house effect that have been practiced by Balinese for centuries.

Balinese have a special ceremony to beg express gratitude to the vegetation and beg for their prosperity to the God so they can always provide their crops for mankind. The ceremony is called Tumpek Wariga or Tumpek Pengatag. Plants are seen as human relatives, as they are also part of God’s family. It is people’s duty to protect plants; moreover Balinese believe that prosperity and comfort will come around whenever the vegetation is protected and conserved.

The prohibition on cutting the big old trees which scattered all over the island due to the socio-religious significant of those trees provides great help to Mother Nature. The big old trees need tens or hundreds of years to grow to reach that size, cutting those trees down is like closing a massive oxygen factory which has been operating for more than a hundred years in other words wasting the time and resource which are used by the tree to grow to reach that size.

There are also prohibition against cutting down trees during a week called Taru, this week occur every six week based on Balinese traditional calendar. Balinese believed that cutting down the trees on this auspicious week can bring misfortune and sickness. Prohibition against cutting the trees down also observed on Sunday and an auspicious day called Kajeng Kliwon which occurs every fifteen days.

All those above mentioned strategies for preserving the environment have been practiced by Balinese in their daily life, and we are more than happy to share it with the rest of the world.

Example: After 4 hours the computer is going to die while after four hours of no activity on the computer. Do not forget the Hibernate tab select enable hibernation. In this mode of work being carried out will not be lost.

Empty cardboard boxes, whether they were used to move personal belongings or to deliver office supplies and furniture, are among the easiest items to recycle. You can toss them into the recycle dumpsters or you can reuse them into many practical and creative items for the home. Here are just a few of the countless ways to recycle those cardboard boxes for home use.

Instructions
Things You'll Need:
• Empty cardboard boxes
• Craft knife or box cutter
• Glue
• Adhesive tape
• Craft paper or art paper

Step 1
Dismantle the boxes and lay them flat so that they don't take up too much space. This way you will also be able to gauge how much cardboard material you have on hand for your recycling projects.

Step 2
Plan your projects. Make sketches and estimate dimensions. Be ready with your craft knife or box cutter (scissors are often inadequate in cutting up thick cardboard), enough glue, art paper or other decorative items you want to include in your project.

Step 3
Recycle cardboard into an art frame.
Make an art frame. The flat, rigid surface of a cardboard panel makes it easy to work with as if it were a wood panel. Cut a piece to size to serve as the backboard. Stack strips and glue them together to create the frame borders. Wrap the borders by gluing craft paper for a natural look or art paper for different color effects. Attach a lightweight art piece to the middle of the frame, glue or tape a hanging wire on the back and hang the frame on the wall.

Step 4
Make a trash bin. Design a customized and personalized trash bin that will coordinate with your décor. Cut cardboard panels and tape them together to form an open container of just the right shape and size. Decorate the outside by gluing craft paper, art paper, fabric or any other desired texture. Decorate with items such as dried botanicals, beads, sticks and shells.

Step 5
Make a mini-shelf.
Make a mini-shelf. Because cardboard can be glued together to form relatively sturdy boards and panels, they can be cut and assembled into small shelving units. Cardboard shelves can hold lightweight containers of herbs, spices, condiments and teabags.

Step 6
Make a divider for the sock drawer. Design the most ergonomic sectioning for your sock drawer and create the dividers by cutting and gluing cardboard sections together.

Step 7
Make file organizers. You don't have to buy expensive desktop filing systems; make your own. Design the boxes with dividers to cater to your filing system, whether they're recipe cards, loose photos, bills, store coupons, documents or whatever you need to keep sorted and organized. Decorate the boxes with your favorite colors and designs.

Step 8
Use your imagination to create various cardboard crafts and décor items for the home.

Samsung had start to use bio-plastic in their cellphone series, W150 and F268, these two series start to use bio-plastic to replace steel component but still using conventional plastic in their product. Conventional plastic is made from oil substance, therefore conventional plastic is not consider as green component.

How to Recycle Plastic

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has set a national goal to recycle 25
percent of our national waste. Some plastics can be recycled through curbside
recycling, grocery store drop bins or drop-off centers. A raised number (1 through 7) in a triangle on the bottom of most plastic containers tells you what type of plastic it is and if it can be recycled.

Instructions:

1. Step 1
Call your county's Department of Public Works or recycling center to determine what type of plastic to recycle and where to take it. Also call 1-800-CLEANUP for state recycling information.

2. Step 2
Rinse and sort your plastic containers by number. Recyclable plastic often must be separated by number in order to avoid contamination as it begins the recycling process.

3. Step 3
Recycle type 1 (PETE) and type 2 (HDPE) plastic containers at your curb, according to local instructions. Type 1 and 2 containers include some plastic bags, detergent containers, and milk, soft drink, juice, cooking oil and water bottles.

4. Step 4
Drop off plastic grocery bags - usually type 4 (LDPE), sometimes type 2, though not always marked - at your grocery store to be recycled. Most large chain grocery stores will have bins located in the store. Types 2 and 4 can be mixed most of the time, but read the signs first to be sure. Clean out bags before recycling.

5. Step 5
Call the Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers, (410) 451-8340, or visit their Web site to find a local recycling center in your area that will take foam packaging (type 6, Expanded Polystyrene or EPS). Other type 6 items such as plastic utensils will most likely need to be thrown out.

6. Step 6
Throw out types 3 (plastic food wrap and vegetable oil bottles), 5 (yogurt containers, syrup bottles, diapers, some bags, most bottle tops and some food wrap) and 7 (layered or mixed plastic). While some of these are recyclable, the plastics industry is still in the early stages of recycling and does not recycle these in most cities unless it is through a test program.

7. Step 7
Take caps and pump spray tops off of plastic containers unless they are marked with a number. They are often made from a type of plastic that is different from the main part of the container and generally are not recyclable.

8. Step 8
Find out if your community requires you to remove labels from plastic containers before you recycle them.

9. Step 9
Crush plastic containers to save space in your recycling bin.

Batteries should be recycled at the appropriate locations, not thrown in the garbage and paper and post-it notes can easily be recycled if kept separate.

Cut down on the amount of paper you use in your office by minimizing the amount of printing you do. Consider if you really need to print out emails or draft versions of documents you are working on.

Use the duplex printing option on your printer to use both sides of a sheet of paper. Today, even low-cost ink jet printers can print on both sides of a sheet of paper.

Keep documents and paper mail you receive and use the back side as quick note pads or scratch paper. Even envelopes can be used to jot down a quick note to yourself.

Drive Smart!
A well-tuned car with properly inflated tires burns less gasoline—cutting pollution and saving you money at the pump. If you have two cars, drive the one with better gas mileage whenever possible. Better yet, skip the drive and take public transit, walk, or bicycle when you can.

Buy Local and Organic

Did you know the average American meal travels more than 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate? Think of all the energy wasted and pollution added to the atmosphere—not to mention all the pesticides and chemicals used to grow most produce! So go to your local organic farmer to get your fruits and veggies.

Support clean, renewable energy.
Renewable energy solutions, such as wind and solar power, can reduce our reliance on coal-burning power plants, the largest source of global warming pollution in the United States. Call your local utility and sign up for renewable energy. If they don't offer it, ask them why not?

Also, support a national renewable electricity standard (RES). The Energy Bill signed in 2007 lacked key components that address our energy security and global warming emissions: a renewable electricity standard of 15 percent by 2020 and a tax package that will provide investment incentives for clean energy alternatives. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.

Saving energy at home is good for the environment and for your wallet.
Start with caulking and weather-stripping on doorways and windows. Then adjust your thermostat and start saving. For each degree you lower your thermostat in the winter, you can cut your energy bills by three percent.

Finally, ask your utility company to do a free energy audit of your home to show you how to save even more money.

Become a smart water consumer.
Install low-flow showerheads and faucets and you'll use half the water without decreasing performance. Then turn your hot water heater down to 120°F and see hot-water costs go down by as much as 50 percent.

Many people live in a big city. There are many high rise building create problems such as: global warming, energy wastes, pollution, reduce water supply, and other problem in environment, but number of new high rise building is increasing.

A great example of the initiative Chicago is taking in advancing the development of green roofs is the transformation of a portion of the City Hall’s roof into a green roof. The largest advantage shown by the development of this green roof has been the data collected about its temperatures. There is an occurrence called the urban heat island which is where urban centres have average temperatures of 6 to 10 °F higher than surrounding areas due to the high concentration of dark rooftops and other surface areas. There are other cities in Japan, USA, Indonesia and other city create high building with roof garden on the top of the building. Roof garden also calls as green roof. Roof garden also creates a new beautiful view in our city.

There are many benefits if a building built with a roof garden. Green roof design will improve air and water quality and reduce the urban heat island effect and risk of flooding. Ultimately, benefits seen by the city of Chicago will provide incentive for the rest of the world to become more environmentally progressive. These innovative roofs have proven to be a technology that will move the world in a "greener" direction.

Green roofs also provide another benefit to humans and the environment. Green roofs, and the newly developed green walls, filter air, disposing pollutants and CO2. This helps deal with air pollution. Green roofs are able to do this because plants growing on green roofs absorb pollutants.

We all know that we need land to live. We need them to plant wheat, rice, fruits, etc for our food; as well as the space for our home, and so forth. Land developers build homes for us. Not only that, they also give us our shopping centers, apartments, amusement parks, and other structures that can fulfill our needs. But sometimes we go too much. We cut down trees and forests just for a luxury villa for a rich people and movie stars. We pollute rivers only to make rings and bracelets. We kill sharks for a disgusting dish made of their fins.

We don’t really need luxury villas. Many people that built the villas just want to live large, show off, and impress the public. We don’t really need expensive rings and bracelets. It’s just for show off. We can always eat something else, anything but the shark fin soup, dog meat, kangaroo meat, and so forth and so on. We can use cotton for our clothes, and not animal fur. That’s why Miss Universe Riyo Mori got criticized by animal activists for wearing animal fur on her clothes. She even got e-mailed because she didn’t respond to the strike they’ve put up.

We, humans, have lived for a long time on this planet. In ancient times, we didn’t pollute the lakes. We used cotton and fur from animals that were plentiful, such as sheep. We didn’t hunt too many sharks; we hunted them on a limited number. But now, we live in a total opposite of those behaviors, and then we start having many problems. Maybe it’s about time for us to go back to the Stone Age and try to live like ape-man. Just kidding.

We have been having problems with nature. Our pollution causes global warming and holes in the ozone layer. The ice at the poles is melting, and we’re on the brink of sinking. Global warming also whips up more storms and tornadoes. Pollution and our bad habit create another problem in our health and social life. And now, we’re suffering from it. No more beautiful skin and cozy environment in our daily life.

In our city, the troubles are becoming worse with every coming minute. You’ve seen the problems on TV. You know the problems. We all know how to solve them. But why it hasn’t been solved? Economic profit for the major companies is the main cause of the unsolved problems. George W. Bush hasn’t ratified many environment agreements, thus causing the USA to be one of the major pollutants of the world. Come on, people. We need nature. Nature needs us. Where else can we live – Mars? We haven’t developed Mars, man. We don’t have the technology, yet. So we need to keep nature alive for as long as we can. Besides, we can’t live alone. We’re not alone on this planet. Don’t build villas or high rise tower for yourself and endangering nature and millions of people – including yourself – at the same time. You know how it works. Let’s Stop Global Warming now. Let’s recycle, reuse, and use greener product as much as you can. Go Green.

If we reduce the usage of products, reuse the products that are still useable, and recycle trash to make our household materials, factories will produce less, and give off less carbon dioxide. Reboisasi Hutan Mangrove sebagai Salah Satu Upaya untuk Mengurangi Global Warming

Kerusakan hutan tropis yang terjadi di berbagai negara di dunia semakin meningkat dari tahun ke tahun dan bahkan dalam dua atau tiga decade yang akan datang diperkirakan akan mengalami ancaman kepunahan yang disebabkan karena penebangan liar (illegal logging), pengalihan fungsi lahan, eksploitasi hutan yang berlebihan, dan lain-lain. Sehingga pada awal tahun 1990-an para ahli lingkungan dari seluruh dunia mengadakan pertemuan di Rio de Jenero, Brasil yang pada intinya membahas mengenai langkah dan strategi yang harus dilakukan untuk melestarikan alam termasuk juga upaya mengurangi laju kerusakan atau penyelamatan hutan tropis tersebut.

Di Indonesia, laju kerusakan hutan mencapai 2,8 juta hektar per tahun dari total luas hutan yaitu seluas 120 juta hektar yang tersebar di seluruh pelosok Indonesia. Dari total luas hutan tersebut, sekitar 57 sampai 60 juta hektar sudah mengalami degradasi dan kerusakan sehingga sekarang ini Indonesia hanya memiliki hutan yang dalam keadaan baik kira-kira seluas 50% dari total luas yang ada. Kondisi semacam ini apabila tidak disikapi dengan arif dan segera dilakukan upaya-upaya penyelamatan oleh pemerintah dan seluruh warga negara Indonesia maka dalam jangka waktu dua dasawarsa Indonesia akan sudah tidak memiliki hutan lagi (Mangrove Information Center, 2006).

Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara yang memiliki hutan mangrove terluas di dunia mencapai 25% dari total luas hutan mangrove di seluruh dunia (18 juta hektar) yaitu seluas 4.5 juta hektar atau sebanyak 3,8 % dari total luas hutan di Indonesia secara keseluruhan. Sedikitnya luas hutan mangrove ini mengakibatkan perhatian Pemerintah Indonesia terhadap hutan mangrove sangat sedikit juga, dibandingkan dengan hutan darat. Kondisi hutan mangrove juga mengalami kerusakan yang hampir sama dengan keadaan hutan-hutan lainnya di Indonesia (Mangrove Information Center, 2006).

Penebangan hutan baik hutan darat maupun hutan mangrove secara berlebihan tidak hanya mengakibatkan berkurangnnya daerah resapan air, abrasi, dan bencana alam seperti erosi dan banjir tetapi juga mengakibatkan hilangnya pusat sirkulasi dan pembentukan gas karbon dioksida (CO2) dan oksigen O2 yang diperlukan manusia untuk kelangsungan hidupnya.
Kebanyakan orang (khususnya para pengusaha yang memperjualbelikan hasil kayu hutan, investor yang mengembangkan usahanya dengan menebang hutan dan digantikan dengan tanaman lainnya seperti kelapa sawit atau menggantinya denganusaha lain seperti tambak, dan oknum pejabat yang mengeluarkan ijin untuk penebangan kayu di hutan) menutup mata dan sama sekali tidak merasa bersalah dan berdosa terhadap bencana-bencana alam yang sudah, sedang dan akan terjadi sehubungan dengan kegiatan yang mereka lakukan. Miskinnya keperdulian dan kesadaran terhadap lingkungan bagi orang-orang tersebut harus ditingkatkan secara khusus di era yang sedang gencar-gencar membicarakan tentang global warming karena model pendidikan lingkungan yang biasanya dilakukan sudah tidak mampu lagi untuk menyadarkan manusia-manusia serakah tersebut yang cendrung mengkorbankan kepentingan orang banyak demi kepentingan pribadi dan keluarganya. Dapat diyakini bahwa orang tersebut memiliki kontribusi yang banyak terhadap global warming yang terjadi sekarang ini sehingga mereka sepantasnya mendapatkan ganjaran yang setimpat atas perbuatannya. Berani dan mampukah aparat penegak hukum di Indonesia untuk menindak tegas para oknum ini demi keselamatan dan keberlangsungan alam serta kepentingan dan kelangsungan hidup manusia di Indonesia dan dunia?

Fakta kerusakan hutan khususnya mangrove dapat dilihat dengan jelas di Bali. Pembabatan hutan mangrove secara besar-besaran mulai dari Desa Pesanggaran sampai dengan Desa Pemogan (perbatasan antara Kota Denpasar dan Kabupaten Badung) yang dilakukan sebelum tahun 1990an yang dilakukan oleh investor yang bergerak dalam bidang usaha tambak udang telah mengakibatkan berkurangnya luas area hutan mangrove secara drastis di wilayah tersebut. Pada awal perkembangannya tambak-tambak udang tersebut memang menguntungkan dan mampu meningkatkan perekonomian masyarakt lokal. Tetapi, setelah beberapa tahun beroperasi, tambak-tambak tersebut mulai mengalami kerugian sehingga mengakibatkan kebangkrutan yang berujung pada penutupan usaha pertambakkan.
Hengkangnya para investor tambak udang tersebut meninggalkan bekas dan luka yang mendalam dan berkepanjangan bagi lingkungan di tempat tersebut sampai sekarang. Pohon mangrovepun tidak bisa tumbuh lagi khususnya ditempat-tempat pemberian makanan udang karena kerasnya bahan kimia yang dipakai untuk membersarkan udang secara instant. Sedangkan investor-investor tersebut sudah menghilang entah kemana?

Menyikapi fenomena tersebut, Pemerintah Indonesia melalui Departemen Kehutanan mengeluarkan beberapa kebijakan (policy) yang diharapkan mampu menyelamatkan kekayaan alam berupa hutan tropis yang tersebar di seluruh penjuru nusantara. Salah satu kebijakannya adalah tentang upaya penyelamatan hutan mangrove yang selanjutnya pada tahun 1992 dibentuk Pusat Informasi Mangrove (Mangrove Information Center).

Mangrove Information Center (MIC) merupakan proyek kerjasama antara Pemerintah Indonesia melalui Proyek Pengembangan Pengelolaan Hutan Mangrove Lestari dan Pemerintah Jepang melalui Lembaga Kerjasama Internasional Pemerintah Jepang melalui Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA).

Proyek kerjasama ini terdiri dari beberapa tahapan. Tahap pertama dimulai pada tahun 1992 dan berakhir tahun 1997. Pada tahapan ini, Pemerintah Jepang mengirim team untuk melakukan identifikasi hal-hal apa saja yang dibutuhkan dan dilakukan. Dari hasil identifikasi ini, dibentukalan team bersama antara Pemerintah Indonesia dan Pemerintah Jepang dan selanjutnya sepakat untuk membangun Proyek Pengelolaan Hutan Mangrove Lestari. Proyek ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengekplorasi teknik-teknik reboisasi yang bisa dilakukan untuk pemulihan (recovery) kondisi hutan mangrove yang sudah mengalami kerusakan. Teknik yang ditemukan adalah tentang bagaimana cara persemaian bibit dan penanaman mangrove. Selain itu, diterbitkan juga buku panduan penanaman mangrove. Hasil yang dicapai pada tahap ini adalah penentuan model pengelolaan hutan mangrove lestari, penerbitan beberapa buku seperti; buku panduan (guide book) persemaian bibit dan penanaman mangrove, buku-buku yang berkaitan dengan mangrove, dan reboisasi atau penanaman mangrove seluas 253 hektar di kawasan Taman Hutan Raya (TAHURA).

Usaha reboisasi hutan mangrove yang telah dilakukan oleh The Mangrove Information Center memiliki arti yang sangat penting bagi masyarakat di Kota Denpasar dan Kabupaten Badung karena persediaan untuk konsumsi oksigen sudah tersedia di tempat ini dan meningkatkan rasa aman dari bencana tsunami bagi masyarakat yang berdekatan dengan hutan mangrove tersebut. Selain itu, kesadaran dan kepedulian masyarakat terhadap pentingnya pelestarian hutan mangrove semakin meningkat. Ini dibuktikan dengan semakin banyaknya sekolah-sekolah (dari sekolah dasar sampai perguruan tinggi) dan industri pariwisata dengan secara sukarela untuk ikut serta menanam pohon mangrove di beberapa tempat seperti di kawasan konservasi The Mangrove Information Center dan Pulau Serangan yang bibit-bibit pohon mangrovenya disediakan oleh pihak The Mangrove Information Center. Usaha lain yang dilakukan oleh The Mangrove Information Center untuk meningkatkan kesadaran dan kepedulian masyarakat tentang pentingnya pelestarian lingkungan adalah dengan membuka kegiatan wisata alam (ecotourism) sehingga masyarakat dapat melihat, menikmati dan berinteraksi dengan lingkungan secara langsung di kawasan hutan mangrove tersebut.

Earn a Better Living in Jakarta

We can make Jakarta better with efforts from all of us. Jakarta is one of the big city in the world.

First of all, Jakarta needs more trees and public places. The parks we see now are mostly defunct. Some of them even turned into gas stations. We can see gas stations in the middle of green belts in Jakarta. If we don’t do something to limit the numbers of gas stations, there will be no trees to absorb pollution, and also fewer parks for wild animals and people to relax. Trees in the parks also help absorb, hold, and maintain underground water. Without them, our supply of underground water will be depleted, and we won’t have clean water for our house. Ground levels will also go down if the underground water runs out, because the water supports the ground. If the water runs out, the underground water level gets low, and so does the ground. Also, we need to add more environment-friendly public vehicles and cut down the numbers of private vehicles.

Public vehicles nowadays (not counting the new and environment-friendly Transjakarta Bus and the gas fueled Bajaj) contribute more air pollutants than private vehicles, because their drivers are not taking care of their vehicles. Also, too much private vehicles will cause traffic jams and pollution. We should refrain from using private vehicles when travelling short distances. Don’t use your car if you’re going to the market a few blocks away. Use your bike or walk. If travelling long distances, try using the Transjakarta, because it’s cheap and fast. The government should strictly regulate the quality and quantity of vehicles to avoid pollution and overcrowding of vehicles. We shouldn’t be ashamed when taking the bus. We should be proud for being a part of the act to stop pollution.

In addition, teenagers need other places to go, not only malls. We have too much malls and unnecessary buildings. Some of them are discontinued in the middle of the building. Maybe we should build parks for teens, where they can play basketball or maybe riding their skateboards. The parks will need trees and other plants of course. The environment will absorb pollutants, and teens get healthy in the process. Lead and other chemical substances in the air can degenerate children’s and teenagers’ brains and bring health problems. Another problem is that not all teenagers are rich, and not all of them can go to malls and enjoy their facilities. Those who can’t go to malls need space to play, but the space they need is taken by malls. One case can be found in Central Jakarta. Some children and teenagers were found swimming in the fountain of Plaza Indonesia. A picture was taken and shown in the newspaper. The picture shows one of the main problems in Jakarta: lack of open space. In order to quell this problem, the government should stop giving new permits to build malls, office buildings, and housing estates starting next year.

Finally, we need to promote healthier lifestyle to Jakarta citizens. We live in an unhealthy place, and it’s bad for our health. What’s worse is that we are endangering ourselves with our lifestyle. Smoking, drinking alcohol, eating junk food, and relying too much on machines, you name it! These acts are making us even less fit than the slowest mammal on earth, the sloth. A sloth is a kind of mammal that only eats leaves, and nothing else. Just leaves. This makes them get less energy, and use a small amount of energy every day. Their hearts beat very slowly, so they move very slowly too. Isn’t it embarrassing? Are we going to be like the sloth and move slower than a monkey? Of course not! We should act now and beat the sloth. Eat vegetables and do sports twice a week. For the sports, you don’t have to go to fitness centers and pay big. You can just do some jogging or running around the neighborhood. For a better result, you should walk ten thousand steps a day. It helps maintain the strength and form of your back bone, and it also helps prevent osteoporosis along with milk. It’s just a cheap and easy way to get a healthy life.

HIMPUNAN MOTOR TUA Bali menanam bibit Bakau di hutan Mangrove

Biasanya dalam pandangan kebanyakan orang, club sepeda motor apapun namanya dikenal karena suka lalu lalang di dalam kota atau berkelana ke luar kota dengan suara motor yang mantap dengan pengendara berjaket hitam dengan segala asesorisnya. Mereka dituduh hanya sekumpulan orang yang sekadar menyalurkan hobby mengendari sepeda motor besar (MOGE) atau pamer koleksi motor tua atau terbaru. Di Bandung, bahkan kesan orang sangat negatif terhadap club sepeda motor, dan terdengar berita mereka arogan dan mengganggu dan membahayakan arus lalu lintas di kota itu. Club itu akhirnya dicap sebagai geng sepeda motor dan telah memakan korban di Bandung, sampai meninggal dunia karena dianiaya oleh oknum geng tersebut.

Tentu ada juga khabar bagus dari club sepeda motor. Ternyata ada club yang melakukan aksi nyata di bidang lingkungan hidup, yaitu (HIMPUNAN MOTOR TUA) di Bali telah banyak melakukan aksi positif. Yang sangat membanggakan pada 21 Oktober 2007 yang lalu bersama club sepeda motor lain seperti Bali British Club, Bikers Brotherhood, Rascal Raiders dan HDCI (Harley Davidson lho), mereka dengan penuh dedikasi melakukan penanaman bibit bakau di hutan Mangrove di pantai Bali tepatnya di teluk Badung, tumbuh sepanjang pantai Selatan Sanur sampai Tanjung Benoa (Nusa Dua) dan dikelola oleh Mangrove Sociaety dan Balai Pengelolanan Hutan Mangrove. Hutan mangrove sangat penting untuk menjaga ekosistem pantai dan laut serta mencegah terjadinya erosi pantai, bahkan mampu memperlambat tsunami dan gelombang tinggi.

Menurut Made Sutawijaya (Kadek Wijaya), Public Relation dari Himpunan Motor Tua (Bali), club ini berkomitmen untuk terus melanjutkan aksi positif di bidang lingkungan hidup dan membantu kemajuan tourism atau pariwisata Bali.

Anggota HMT ini selain menyalurkan hobby untuk merawat sepeda motor tua classic buatan Jerman, Amerika dan mayoritas buatan Inggris ini, mereka juga sering mengantar tourist asal luar negeri keliling Bali atau keluar Bali. Banyak wisatawan asing juga dibolehkan menyewa sepeda motor tua itu. Maklum, tourist asing itu juga merupakan penggemar sepeda motor tua. Mereka juga siap bekerja sama untuk aksi-aksi positif dengan siapa saja. Semoga aksi mereka terus menuai sukses dan kita semua bisa enjoy a better life.

Pada akhir tutup tahun 2008 ini, HMT Bali ini akan melakukan bakti sosial berupa kegiatan penghijauan dan clean up di Danau Buyan, dekat Danau Tamblingan dan Danau Beratan, di Bedugul, Tabanan, Bali. Alangkah indahnya dunia ini, apabila club-club sepeda motor dan club mobil lainnya juga mengikuti langkah nyata HMT Bali ini demi lestarinya lingkungan, sehingga kampanye Stop Global Warming bisa semakin bergulir demi sejuknya alam sekitar kita.

Mahasiswa UI, Kampanye: Stop Global Warming

Di tengah gerimis hujan, 3 November 2007, Mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia (UI) dengan bersemangat kampanye “Stop Global Warming” di Bundaran Hotel Indonesia, Jalan Thamrin, Jakarta Pusat, Indonesia. Dengan bergairah mereka meneriakkan yel-yel “Stop Global Warming” kepada para pengendara yang melintasi Jalan Thamrin. Mereka juga membagikan stiker dan brosur berisi kampanye untuk mengatasi pemanasan global. Pada stiker yang dibagikan diantaranya ada tips sederhana kepada masyarakat supaya berpartisipasi aktif mengurangi global warming seperti mematikan alat listrik atau electronic kalau tidak dipakai, mematikan monitor komputer pada posisi standby, mengurangi penggunaan AC, naik speda bila pergi ke tempat yang dekat dan banyak lagi.

Gerakan mahasiswa UI ini disponsori oleh “The Body Shop” dan WWF serta Kementerian Negara Lingkungan Hidup RI. Semoga pula acara besar UN Climate Change Conference 2007 di Bali, Desember 2007 ini sukses. Kawasan Resort Nusa Dua, Bali yang terkenal sebagai lokasi berbagai hotel world class sangat ramah lingkungan karena memiliki pengolahan limbah terpadu ini akan menjadi saksi bagi para peserta konferensi untuk membuktikan mereka sungguh-sungguh akan bertindak untuk mengatasi global warming yang sudah mengkhawatirkan ini.
Kegiatan kampanye Stop Global Warming oleh para mahasiswa UI ini sangat positif. Pada kesempatan itu, saya pun diberikan bibit tanaman yang bisa ditanam di halaman rumah. Ini sebuah ajakan positif, bahwa dengan melakukan penghijauan dari rumah masing-masing, masyarakat sudah memberikan sumbangsih agar bumi bisa lebih hijau dan sehat.

Alangkah indahnya bila mahasiswa dari universitas lain mengikuti movement mahasiswa Universitas Indonesia ini, begitu pula para pelajar, generasi muda dan LSM, serta perusahaan (perwujudan corporate social responsibility) aktif secara berkesinambungan melakukan kampanye Stop Global Warming, dan melakukan sosialisasi bahwa dengan cara sederhana saja dari rumah masing-masing atau kantor tempat mereka bekerja bisa bertindak aktif seperti penghematan pemakaian alat listrik, mematikan lampu yang tidak perlu, menamam bunga atau pohon di lingkungan masing-masing, dan mulai mengurangi penggunaan kendaraan pribadi, sehingga berkurang pula gas CO2 di udara yang sudah penuh polusi berupa methana dan dinitro oksida dan sebagainya.

Alangkah indahnya bila kita memiliki dan bisa menikmati clean air, fresh water, blue sky dan ada green belt di kota-kota, maka kita pasti akan merasakan udara sejuk di tengah dan sekitar kota. Anak-cucu kita akan hidup lebih sehat dan happy. Pokoknya kampanye mahasiswa UI di bundaran HI itu sangat keren dan cool, bukan hanya bisa demonstrasi di bidang politik saja. Bravo mahasiswa UI.
